Built in the 1920's, Teatro Scarpino offers a unique and historic venue space to recreate, entertain and celebrate.
A Brief History Of The Scarpino Building & Business
Built circa 1920, the building was originally part of the old Fayetteville Ice House complex, with 14" thick native rock walls. The building is set in front of the train tracks were blocks of ice would be loaded into the building the stored and sold to the community through the front door, for their "ice boxes". In 1990 Richard Berquist and Gina Scarpino-Berquist bought the building from Marshaltown Tools as a lot split, and rezoned it from Light Industrial to Commercial (C-1). It was remodeled to house our commercial photo studio, Berquist-Armstrong Photography, which later became Berquist & Associates Inc. In 2003, the front office of the photo studio was remodeled to house Gelateria Scarpino, an Italian ice-cream parlor.
The artifice and interior design and effect of the interior of the Gelateria was an original expression of the combined efforts of co-owner, Gina Scarpino and West Coast artist Case Simmons. This space is now the home base-camp of Fayettechill. In 2005 a majority of the building was remodeled under the designed plan of Gina to house Teatro Scarpino as a memorial to her beloved Papa, Tony Scarpino, and Gina's grandparents, who were all born in Italy and came to the USA at the turn of the century. It has been a showcase of the workmanship of local artisans and craftsman. While most of the interior furnishings were of Italian design , a majority of the ceiling tins and crown moldings were genuine antiques which were salvaged from the old Lewis Hardware, now the Bank of Fayetteville. The overall concept and design of both the Gelateria and the Teatro was intended to commemorate the love and affection Gina felt for her father and mother, both of Italian ancestry, and lovers of dance, hence the Teatro's vast and beautiful dance floor.
The Teatro was launched Jan 1, 2005. The name Teatro (meaning Theatre in Italian) was chosen for Gina's love of the performing arts. Teatro Scarpino has been providing for all types of events to a very diverse cross-section of people throughout the community of NW Arkansas. Since 2005, Teatro Scarpino has set the bar in NW Arkansas for ambiance and style in providing this community with a place to recreate, celebrate and entertain. We hope to provide this for many generations to come!
